The Heart Behind Our Requests

Verses:"Joshua 15:17-19 - And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife. And it came to pass, as she came unto him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wouldest thou? Who answered, Give me a blessing; for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And he gave her the upper springs, and the nether springs."

As we navigate our relationship with God, our requests reveal our understanding of His character. Just as Achsah's request to Caleb exposed her desires and values, our prayers reflect our comprehension of God's nature.

Consider two individuals asking for the same thing - prosperity, for instance. One may seek wealth to indulge in luxuries, while the other desires to support missions and spread God's word. Same request, different intentions. God hears both prayers, but only one pleases Him.

This distinction highlights the importance of intimacy with God. Knowing Him deeply enables us to align our requests with His will. Psalm 37:4 reminds us, "Delight yourself in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart." When we delight in God, our desires shift to mirror His.

Proverbs 21:2 cautions, "All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the motives." God examines the heart, seeking sincerity and faith. Our requests must be guided by a genuine desire to honor and glorify Him.

As we pray, let us consider the intentions behind our words. Are we seeking self-interest or God's glory? Do our requests reflect a shallow understanding or a deep connection with Him?

May our prayers be infused with right intentions, pleasing God and deepening our relationship with Him.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, help us understand Your heart and intentions. May our requests be guided by a deep faith in Your sovereignty and a sincere desire to honor You. Grant us the wisdom to discern our motivations and align them with Your will. Amen.
