Faithfulness and Accountability
Verse: 1 Samuel 1:17-18 "Then Eli answered, 'Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.' She said, 'May your servant find favor in your eyes.' Then she went her way and ate, and her face was no longer downcast."
Eli, the priest, blessed Hannah and it happened exactly as he had spoken. However, later on, Eli faced a terrible end, along with his sons. This was because he failed to admonish his sons, despite knowing that they were sinning against God. It's clear that Eli's negligence had severe consequences.
But does this mean that Eli was a total failure and unacceptable to God? Not necessarily. Eli was a faithful servant of God, and God had used him to bless Hannah. However, Eli's failure to correct his sons' behavior led to tragic consequences.
This incident teaches us that faithfulness to God is not just about doing great things for Him, but also about being accountable for our actions and the actions of those under our care. As servants of God, we are called to be faithful in every aspect of our lives, including our relationships and our responsibilities.
It's foolish to think that born-again people are exempt from the consequences of their actions. History has shown us that even saints and born-again believers have faced consequences for their actions. The Bible is full of examples of people who were faithful servants of God, but who also faced consequences for their mistakes.
For instance, King David, a man after God's own heart, faced severe consequences for his sin with Bathsheba. The prophet Jonah, who was called by God to preach to Nineveh, faced consequences for his disobedience. These examples remind us that God holds us accountable for our actions, regardless of our spiritual status.
As we reflect on Eli's story, let us be reminded of the importance of faithfulness and accountability in our relationship with God. May we strive to be faithful servants of God, not just in our public lives, but also in our private lives and relationships.
May we not take our salvation for granted, thinking that we are exempt from the consequences of our actions. Instead, may we walk in the fear of the Lord, knowing that He holds us accountable for our actions.
Prayer:
Dear God, help us to be faithful servants of Yours, not just in our public lives, but also in our private lives and relationships. May we be accountable for our actions and the actions of those under our care. May we strive to obey You and walk in integrity, even when it's difficult or challenging. May we not take our salvation for granted, but instead, may we walk in the fear of the Lord, knowing that You hold us accountable for our actions. Amen.
