The Dangers of Impulsive Action
Verses: Exodus 2:11-17 - "One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and saw their forced labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. Looking this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, 'Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?' The man said, 'Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me like you killed the Egyptian?' Then Moses was afraid and thought, 'What I did has been found out.' When Pharaoh heard about this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian."
The story of Moses serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of impulsive action. Acting on impulse, without considering the consequences, can lead to devastating results. Moses' decision to kill the Egyptian, though motivated by a desire to protect his people, ultimately led to severe consequences, including Pharaoh's attempt on his life and his subsequent exile.
A fundamental truth revealed in this story is that no crimes or actions can be secret. This universal fact underscores the reality of a living God who is actively involved in human history. The beneficiary Hebrew's revelation of Moses' deed demonstrates that our actions will always be exposed, and that God sees and knows all.
The price we pay for impulsive actions is often tenfold greater than the effort required to act wisely. A moment of impulse can lead to a lifetime of regret, whereas taking a moment to consider our actions can save us from untold suffering. Moses' story teaches us that wise action requires patience, discernment, and a deep trust in God's sovereignty.
Let us learn from Moses' mistake and strive to act with wisdom and foresight. May we recognize the importance of considering the consequences of our actions and seek God's guidance in all we do.
