A Legacy of Pride: The Edomites' Forgotten God
Verses: Genesis 36:1-43
"These are the generations of Esau, the father of the Edomites in the hill country of Seir. These are the names of Esau's sons: Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Basemath the wife of Esau, and Jeush the son of Oholibamah the wife of Esau. These are the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan... These are the lords of the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz the firstborn of Esau: the lords of Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz, Korah, Gatam, and Amalek."
The Edomites, descendants of Esau, achieved great success and established a long list of lords, but they lacked the Fear of Isaac, the God of their father. This Fear is not just a reverence, but an intimate knowledge of God's character, a trust in His sovereignty, and a surrender to His will.
By forgetting the Fear of Isaac, the Edomites disconnected from the divine life-giving power, and instead, relied on their own strength and wisdom. They built their kingdom on the shaky ground of human pride, rather than the solid rock of God's presence.
As a result, they became devoid of God's guidance, wisdom, and protection. Their legacy was marked by the consequences of their choices, and they eventually faced the judgment of God.
May we learn from the Edomites' example, recognizing the dangers of pride and self-reliance. May we cultivate a deep fear and reverence for God, and may our legacy be one of faith, obedience, and trust in Him. May we surrender our lives to God's sovereignty, and may our hearts be filled with His presence and guidance.
Prayer:
Dear God, help us to recognize the dangers of pride and self-reliance. May we cultivate a deep fear and reverence for You, and may our legacy be one of faith, obedience, and trust in You. May we surrender our lives to Your sovereignty, and may our hearts be filled with Your presence and guidance. May we never forget Your love and provision, and may we always trust in Your goodness and mercy. Amen.
