Remembering God's Past Deliverances

Verses: 1 Samuel 17:34-37

But David said to Saul, "Your servant used to keep his father's sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God." Moreover David said, "The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." And Saul said to David, "Go, and the Lord be with you!"

As we reflect on the story of David and Goliath, we are struck by the courage and confidence that David displayed in the face of overwhelming odds. But where did this courage come from? David himself tells us that it was his past experiences of God's deliverance that gave him the confidence to face the giant. He remembered how God had delivered him from the lion and the bear, and he knew that God would deliver him again.

This is a powerful lesson for us today. When we face new challenges and uncertainties in life, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and afraid. But David's example teaches us that the key to courage and confidence is to remember God's past deliverances in our lives. When we reflect on the ways in which God has worked in our past, we begin to see a pattern of His faithfulness and love. We realize that God is not just a distant deity, but a living and present God who is actively working in our lives.

As we contemplate God's past dealings with us, we begin to form a deeper link with Him. We start to see that God is not just a God of scripture, but a God of experience. The experiences we have of God are more powerful than any scripture, because they are personal and intimate. They are the deeds of God, not just the letters of scripture. When we remember God's past deliverances, we are reminded of His power and His love. We are reminded that He is a God who is worthy of our trust and our confidence.

As we face the challenges of life, let us remember God's past deliverances. Let us reflect on the ways in which He has worked in our lives, and let us trust that He will continue to work in the same way. Let us not be afraid, because we know that God is with us. Let us be courageous, because we know that God is our deliverer.

Prayer:

Dear God, help us to remember Your past deliverances in our lives. Help us to reflect on the ways in which You have worked in our past, and to trust that You will continue to work in the same way. Give us the courage and confidence to face the challenges of life, knowing that You are our deliverer. Help us to form a deeper link with You, and to experience Your love and faithfulness in our lives. Amen.
