Wisdom in Action

Verses: 1 Samuel 21:12-15

"And he changed his behavior before them, and pretended to be insane in their hands, and scribbled on the doors of the gate, and let his saliva fall down on his beard. Then Achish said to his servants, 'Look, you see the man is insane. Why have you brought him to me? Have I need of madmen, that you have brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?'"

In this passage, we see David, a man who had a deep and intimate bond with God, acting like a madman in front of Achish, the king of Gath. At first glance, it may seem like David is being deceitful or manipulative, but as we look deeper, we see that he is actually using his God-given wisdom to protect himself from harm. David could have easily thought that God would deliver him by Himself, without any effort on his part. But instead, he chose to use his intellect and discernment to act wisely in the situation.

David's actions were not driven by a lack of faith in God, but rather by a deep understanding of God's sovereignty and his own role in it. He knew that God had created him with the faculty of discernment and decision-making, and he chose to use these gifts to act wisely. Perhaps he was frenzied sensing the dangers around him, but still, he was in God's premise, trusting in His guidance and protection.

This passage teaches us that God feels happy seeing His creation decide wisely, especially up to His standards using the God-given intellect. When we use our wisdom to act in accordance with God's will, we are not only pleasing Him, but also fulfilling our purpose as His creation. Our wise dealings can be the medium through which God carries out His deeds on our trust. When we trust in God and use our wisdom to make decisions, we can be confident that He will guide us and give us the victory.

But it's also important to remember that when we use our God-given intellect and discernment, the victory we get is still God's. It's not about our own strength or abilities, but about God working through us to achieve His purposes. As we reflect on David's story, we see that his actions were not driven by a desire to take control, but rather by a desire to trust in God and follow His lead.

As we seek to cultivate a deep and intimate bond with God, let us remember that our relationship with Him is not just about following rules and regulations, but about using our God-given wisdom to make wise choices. Let us trust in God's sovereignty and use our intellect and discernment to act wisely, knowing that the victory we achieve is still God's.

Prayer:

Dear God, help us to use our God-given wisdom to make wise choices, especially when it comes to following Your will. Give us the discernment to sense the dangers around us and take steps to protect ourselves, while still trusting in Your sovereignty. Help us to remember that the victory we achieve is still Yours, and that You are the one who guides us and gives us the power to succeed. Amen.
