God's Sovereign Plan

Verses: 1 Samuel 16:18-21

"Then one of the servants answered and said, "Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lord is with him." Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, "Send me your son David, who is with the sheep." And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and a young goat, and sent them by his son David to Saul. So David came to Saul and stood before him. And he loved him greatly, and he became his armorbearer."

As we reflect on the story of David's anointing as the future king of Israel, we are struck by the sovereignty of God's plan. No one knew about Samuel's anointing of David, not even Saul, the current king. Samuel, who had made Saul king, was afraid of him and knew that Saul might behave wrongly towards him. Yet, despite the uncertainty and potential danger, God was working behind the scenes to bring David into the kingship.

David was too young, and his family did not try to manipulate or push him into the spotlight. Instead, they simply returned to their normal life after the anointing, trusting that God would bring about His plan in His own time. David himself was completely inactive in this process, simply obeying his parents and the Lord. He did not try to force his way into the palace or manipulate circumstances to get ahead. Instead, he trusted that God would open doors and bring him into the right position at the right time.

This is a powerful lesson for us today. As believers, we often try to force our own way or manipulate circumstances to get ahead. We try to make things happen in our own strength and wisdom, rather than trusting in God's sovereignty and plan. But the story of David's anointing reminds us that God is always working behind the scenes, even when we cannot see or understand what He is doing.

The only way for us to truly come into the leadership and positions that God has ordained for us is to be silent and trust Him. We must obey His directions and be faithful in our daily lives, trusting that He will bring about His plan in His own time. We must not try to force our own way or manipulate circumstances, but instead trust that God will open doors and bring us into the right position at the right time.

As we reflect on this passage, let us ask ourselves if we are trusting in God's sovereign plan for our lives. Are we trying to force our own way, or are we simply being still and trusting that God is working everything out for our good? Are we obeying His directions and being faithful in our daily lives, or are we trying to manipulate circumstances to get ahead?

Let us learn from David's example and trust in God's sovereign plan for our lives. Let us be still and know that He is God, working everything out for our good.

Prayer:

Dear God, help us to trust in Your sovereign plan for our lives. Help us to be still and know that You are God, working everything out for our good. Give us the faith to simply obey Your directions and trust that You will bring about Your plan in Your own time. Help us to be faithful in our daily lives and to trust that You will open doors and bring us into the right position at the right time. Amen.
