Encouragement in the Lord

Verses:1 Samuel 23:16-18"

"And Jonathan, Saul's son, arose and went to David at Horesh, and encouraged him in the Lord. Then he said to him, 'Do not fear, for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you. You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you. Even my father Saul knows that.' So the two of them made a covenant before the Lord. And David stayed in the woods, and Jonathan went to his own house."

In this passage, we see a beautiful example of encouragement in the Lord. Jonathan, the son of King Saul, takes a great risk to visit his friend David, who is on the run from his father's wrath. Despite the danger, Jonathan is determined to encourage David and remind him of God's promise that he will one day become king over Israel.

What strikes us about Jonathan's encouragement is that it is not based on human strength or ability. He does not tell David to rely on his own power or resources to overcome the challenges he faces. Instead, Jonathan points David to the Lord, reminding him of God's promise and faithfulness. This is the kind of encouragement that truly strengthens and uplifts us, because it is rooted in the rock-solid foundation of God's Word.

Notice that Jonathan's encouragement is not general or vague. He does not simply tell David that "everything will be okay" or that "God is with him." Instead, he speaks specifically and with authority, reminding David of God's promise that he will be king over Israel. This kind of specific encouragement requires a deep understanding of God's character and a strong faith in His promises. It requires us to be willing to take risks and speak words of truth and encouragement to those around us, even when it is difficult or uncomfortable.

When we encourage others in the Lord, we must strive to be specific and targeted in our words. We must remind them of God's promises and faithfulness, and speak directly to their needs and circumstances. This kind of encouragement has the power to transform lives and bring hope and joy to those who are struggling.

As we go about our day, let us ask ourselves if we are being encouragers like Jonathan. Are we pointing others to the Lord and reminding them of His promises and faithfulness? Are we taking risks to speak words of truth and encouragement to those around us? Are we being specific and targeted in our words, speaking directly to the needs and circumstances of those we are encouraging? Let us strive to be like Jonathan, who encouraged David in the Lord and helped him to see that God was with him, even in the midst of great danger.

Prayer:

Dear God, help us to be encouragers like Jonathan, who pointed David to the Lord and reminded him of Your promises and faithfulness. Give us the courage to take risks and speak words of truth and encouragement to those around us. Help us to be specific and targeted in our words, speaking directly to the needs and circumstances of those we are encouraging. Give us a deep understanding of Your character and a strong faith in Your promises, so that we can encourage others in the Lord and help them to grow in their faith. Amen.
