The Dangers of Unprepared Presence
Verses:Numbers 17:12-13, "And the children of Israel said to Moses, 'We perish, we are undone, we are all undone. Everyone who comes near, who comes near to the tabernacle of the Lord, dies. Shall we all utterly perish?'"
In Numbers 17, the Israelites witnessed a tragic event – those who approached the tent of meeting died. This alarming incident underscores a vital truth: God's presence demands ultimate holiness. We often pray for God's presence, desiring His closeness and guidance. However, we must recognize that His presence requires sanctification. Without it, His presence can become a consuming fire, bringing judgment rather than blessing.
The Israelites' experience serves as a cautionary tale: God's holiness is not to be taken lightly, unpreparedness invites tragedy, and sanctification precedes divine presence. Scripture reinforces this truth: "Be holy, for I am holy" (Leviticus 11:44) and "Our God is a consuming fire" (Hebrews 12:29).
Before imploring God's presence, we must examine our hearts and lives: Are we living in obedience to God's Word? Have we confessed and repented of sin? Do we prioritize holiness above worldly desires? Let us learn from the Israelites' experience and approach God's presence with reverence and humility.
In our eagerness to experience God's presence, let us not forget the importance of sanctification. May our hearts be purified, and our lives be consecrated to Him. May we understand that sometimes, it is better for God to be at a distance, where our prayers can reach Him, until we are prepared to receive His presence.
Prayer:
Dear God, help us understand the importance of sanctification in Your presence. Purify our hearts and lives, that we may approach You with reverence and humility. May our desire for Your presence be matched by our commitment to holiness. Amen.
