Loving God Always Finds a Way
Verses: 1 Chronicles 22:7–8
“And David said to Solomon his son, As for me, it was in my heart to build a house unto the name of Jehovah my God. But the word of Jehovah came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build a house unto my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my sight.”
David speaks with tenderness and transparency as he recalls the deepest desire of his heart—to build a house for the name of the Lord. He confesses to Solomon that this dream was not born out of ambition, pride, or a desire to immortalize his accomplishments. It was simply “in my heart,” because God was the supreme affection of his life. David loved God dearly, and that love naturally expressed itself in a longing to give something beautiful and permanent to God. When the nomadic journey of Israel ended and the people entered a settled life, David sensed that the tabernacle the dwelling of God’s presence deserved a permanent home. His heart could not bear the thought that while he lived in a palace of cedar, the ark of God still rested within curtains.
This love had been seen long before, especially in the way David treated the ark of testimony. The reverence, the joy, the dancing, the trembling honour everything revealed that God’s presence was the treasure of his life. David valued God more than crowns, victories, or public praise. So when God prohibited him from building the temple because he had shed much blood in war, David did not grow bitter or silent. He did not retreat into discouragement or hide behind excuses. Instead, love made him move even faster. He began gathering gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, precious stones, and craftsmen. He arranged the Levites, priests, and Aronites, preparing every detail so that Solomon could build swiftly. David accepted God’s “no,” but he refused to reduce his love into passivity. Love transformed his disappointment into service.
It was not love for his son that drove him; it was love for his God. David’s heart was irresistibly drawn toward the Lord. Even when God told him, in effect, “You are not the one to do this,” David did not feel rejected. He felt responsible to do everything still possible to honour God. Love does not demand a role. Love simply looks for a way. When one door is closed, love finds another opening. Love never waits for ideal conditions. It only waits for opportunities to express itself. That is why David could say in his actions: If I cannot build, I will prepare. If I cannot lay the stones, I will gather them. If I cannot raise the walls, I will strengthen the hands of the one who will. Love is never discouraged when denied a position; it simply seeks another form of obedience.
So it is with us. You may feel that age has slowed you, that your season of strength is behind you, that opportunities seem fewer. You may believe your greatest years of ministry or expression are gone. But if you love God, there will always always be a way to show it. Till your final breath, the Lord will give you some chance, some assignment, some space to pour out your devotion. Love never retires. Love never becomes useless. Love always finds a way to offer something precious to its beloved Creator.
Prayer:
O Lord, place in my heart the same love David had a love that does not break when You say no, a love that works even when its deepest dreams are denied, a love that looks for every chance to honour You. Teach me to value Your presence above all things. Help me to offer my strength, my time, my resources, and my remaining days as an act of devotion to You. Even when seasons change, give me a heart that keeps serving, keeps preparing, and keeps loving You without discouragement. Let my life, like David’s, become a testimony that love always finds a way. Amen.
